Blitz
Poster Campaign |
The inside of a bathroom stall may
never look the same again if Safe Campuses Now has anything to do
with it. SCN has initiated a poster campaign that addresses issues
such as exercise and pedestrian safety, date rape, DUI prevention
and alcohol poisoning. The posters will be placed in bathroom stalls
in local bars and restaurants. They will also appear in high schools
and colleges including Piedmont, Gainesville and Athens Tech, along
with The University of Georgia.
SCN worked with the Hospitality Resource Panel, business owners,
students and law enforcement agencies to develop key topics. The
posters pertaining to alcohol and pedestrian-related injuries will
be funded through a grant from the Governor's Office of Highway
Safety. Donations are being sought to fund other topics related to
young adults. SCN is making a conscious effort to reach both male
and female audiences.
In order to get these important messages across effectively, SCN
interns majoring in marketing, public relations and health
promotions and behavior consulted with Snowden Tatarski, a local
marketing firm, and a graphic designer with Leon Farmer & Co.
from The
Informer Spring 2004 issue.

Why Do a Poster
Campaign?
The poster campaign is an excellent way
to pair imagery with messages. SCN knows the statistics and
feels that creating awareness is the key to prevention and
education regarding safety and that vivid posters with a powerful
meaning are extremely effective in accomplishing these goals.
- 1 out of 8 college women will be raped while in college
- victims of rape are twice as likely to be attacked by someone they know
verses a stranger
- 90% of campus rapes involve alcohol, either used by the perpetrator or
the victim
- in Athens-Clarke County alone, 646 underage consumption citations were
given from January to September in 2003

Where will these
Posters be Distributed?
Posters are distributed, free of charge, every two months to
numerous Athens locations including downtown bars, restaurants,
and shops, University of Georgia buildings such as the Greek
houses, On-Campus Residents, as well as other high schools and
colleges in the Athens area.

How does Safe Campuses
Now pay for the posters?
SCN funding comes from donations and
grants, including a recent grant from the Georgia Governor's
Office of Highway Safety to produce posters addressing pedestrian
safety and to reduce alcohol-related injury and death.
Leon Farmer & Company and Georgia Power donations will help pay
for the printing of the date rape awareness posters. Additional
individual and corporate donations are being sought to fund this
and other SCN programs.

What are some of the
challenges with the Blitz Poster Campaign?
The challenge Safe Campuses Now faces
is taking a concept and reducing it to a single image causing
viewers to exercise caution before making personal safety decisions.
Through SCN's Blitz Campaign, students are faced with gritty,
effective material that are making an impact.
The campaign is
more than just posters - Safe Campuses Now messages are seen on
billboards, in newspapers and magazines, and on buses. Thanks
to support from in-kind partners, SCN messages are everywhere and
spreading! |
