Safe Campuses Now presents Chris Sandy and Eric Krug.  Two real life stories demonstrating the life impact drinking and driving can have.

featuring Chris Sandy
Seven years ago, Chris Sandy was a normal 22-year old kid.  That normal life came to an abrupt end on the evening of April 11, 2000 when Chris decided to go to a party, have four mixed drinks, and drive down a country road outside of Atlanta...

featuring Eric Krug
Ten years ago, Eric Krug was a standout baseball player at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia.  He was a typical college student...enjoying life, hanging out with friends and having a good time.  But this life that Eric knew came to an abrupt and horrific end on the night of April 11, 1997...

On-Campus Living

At the University of Georgia, every hall on campus except McWhorter is equipped with biometric hand readers, and every student who enters the building must have a UGA identification card.  What happens if you lose your ID card? You'll have to get another one, but someone who finds your card will not be able to use it to enter the residence halls because each card is programmed with a specific hand scan.

Pretty neat, right? But don't rely on this only - check below for more safety tips.
  • Even if it seems like a hassle, the front desk is there for your benefit and safety. By showing your ID, you are protecting yourself and everyone in the resident hall. Do not let someone in "on your card." You might be letting in a criminal.
  • Always lock your door - even when you are in your room, or just going to the bathroom or next door. A theft takes less than a minute.
  • Some insurance companies will protect your valuables (under your parent's homeowner's policy) while you are away at school. Also, check with your school's insurance manager to find out if property protection policies are available through the school.
  • Going home for the weekend or the holidays? Take all cash, jewelry, etc. with you.
  • If you see someone or something that looks suspicious, report it to the RA or call Campus Police.
  • Keep cash and jewelry in a locked drawer, cabinet or closet. Keep the number of valuables you take to school to a minimum.
  • When in an elevator, stand next to the controls. Having a stranger in charge of the emergency stop switch could be dangerous.
  • Never prop doors open, especially fire doors, even for a short time. Anyone could slip in.
  • In a dorm, screaming can sound like partying. In an emergency, be specific by shouting "help", "police" or "fire."
  • Close your blinds - especially at night or whenever you are not home.
  • Do not leave your name on your answering machine.
  • Do not relay on campus crime statistics if you want to learn the whole story about crime in your area. "On-campus" only covers classrooms, dorms and common areas, not off-campus housing, clubs, fraternity/sorority houses, downtown. Students spend the majority of their time off-campus.
  • Engrave all valuables with your driver's license number preceded by your state abbreviation. This will help ensure your items can be returned to you if they are stolen. The UGA Police Department web site has info about engraving property. Keep a list of all valuables by serial number, description, or brand name in case your items are stolen. Give a copy to a family member in case you can't get to yours.
