Why are you
involved with SCN?
I first learned of SCN through my career services
consultant. SCN was searching for spring interns and she
suggested I check into the organization to see if it was a
good fit for me. After submitting my resume and interviewing
with Executive Director, Keith Sims, I was brought on board
to assist with the funding and grant writing aspects of the
organization.
My first
few months at SCN were exciting, informative and FUN! I
learned so much in such a short time, and I began taking my
personal safety much more seriously. The combination of
personal stories and innovative programs led me to encourage
my friends and peers to come check out our events.
A
leadership position became available during the next
semester, and I felt I was ready to handle the
responsibilities and challenges of the position. This
December will mark my second year with SCN. I have stayed
with the organization because I truly believe in the mission
and the people that I work with.
"I
look forward to seeing how Safe Campuses Now will morph and
adapt in the future, and I hope that the work we accomplish
this year will be a good foundation for those changes!"

"I interned at SCN during Spring and
Summer Semesters 2004. Served as Self Defense Class Coordinator and
assisted with other special projects and events (Freshmen
Orientation, etc.) Undoubtedly the best internship experience I
could ever ask for. At SCN I gained valuable experience by working
hands-on to plan and implement programs, not just stuffing envelopes
and sitting idly by like at other internships. The friends and
contacts I made while at SCN are priceless. Plus, working at
SCN was so much fun! I firmly believe that every community needs an
organization like SCN and I feel very fortunate that I am able to
continue to use SCN as a resource in my daily career."

"My
two years at SCN were full of fun and many valuable experiences that
gave me the skills to succeed in a corporate environment and to
continue spreading the message of safety. When I left Safe Campuses,
I left with new friends, many good memories and an armory of
important information that I'll never stop sharing."

"I
was on the first exec board for the 2005-2006 school year and I am a
master at team builders. I miss SCN every single day and I am
fortunate to have learned as much as I did about safety and making
wise decisions. Although I came to SCN because of The Informer, I
stayed with the organization because I felt like they were working
hard to make a difference in the lives of college students. Athens
is lucky to have such a hard-working organization and I hope
students take advantage of the messages SCN puts out because it
could save their lives."

"I
had the privilege of completing two internships with Safe Campuses
Now (SCN). I chose SCN as my destination for my first internship
because I had heard such great things about SCN and an internship
was a requirement of my major in Health Promotion. I chose SCN yet
again for my Educational Marketing internship because I knew I would
have numerous opportunities to develop my marketing portfolio and
network at SCN events. I had such an awesome experience with SCN.
Keith Sims is absolutely amazing! She is dedicated, works
wonderfully with students, and is always willing to provide
guidance in any situation. I feel lucky to have been given the
opportunity to work with her and SCN. Working with SCN opened my
eyes as a new college student to the awareness of safety issues on
the University of Georgia's campus and in the Athens community as
well as in my own professional growth. SCN contributes to our campus
and community in such a great way. I want to thank Mrs. Sims for her
enormous heart and dedication to the organization. She truly is an
inspiration!"

"I became an
IT intern for Safe Campuses Now in February of 2002 and later became
the IT Chair when the Executive Board was created. Being part of
Safe Campuses Now was one of the most memorable and rewarding parts
of my college experience. Not only did I gain valuable knowledge and
experience working on the web site but working towards the mission
of making our community safer was extremely rewarding. I could not
have asked for a better group of people to work with. Keith Sims is
an awesome boss and one of the most dedicated and hardest working
people I know. I feel extremely lucky to have been part of such an
outstanding organization."

"I began
volunteering at SCN in the Fall of 2003. I assisted with
poster campaigns, fundraisers, articles, and more. My best
memory of SCN was probably pretending to be dead at the funeral home
in Cleveland. I got to meet a bunch of great folks and see the
darker side of what happens late night in Athens."
"I am
currently working in Athens for a local real estate
builder/developer. I am also looking to apply to a few MBA
schools for next year."

"I started working
at SCN so that I could get some hands-on Public Relations experience
for my resume. But, I got so much more out of it than that! I
started working at SCN my junior year in 2004 and stayed on until
graduation in 2006. I was fortunate to be on SCN's first Exec Board
during the 2005-2006 school year, and together we spread the
importance of safety to not just UGA students, but other college and
high school students in Athens and the rest of Georgia. SCN taught
me that student safety is not something that can be blown off, and
the more active you are in educating, advocating and enlightening
students, the more precautious and aware people will become. I miss
SCN all the time. I made some wonderful friends, have awesome
memories (like singing "Safety Love" in a talent show in front of
hundreds of students, for example) and learned a lot about the
workings of a non-profit organization which I know will help me
later on, since that's where I want to work after I get my Master's
degree. SCN will give you the opportunity to get real world
experience that will overflow into all different fields and
professions."
